What is a Facelift?
A facial rhytidectomy, or facelift, is a surgical procedure that tightens the skin and supporting tissues of the face and neck. A facelift does not change your fundamental appearance but does allow a more youthful appearance to be restored as a result of facial aging. A facelift can only be performed surgically; non-surgical rejuvenation treatments cannot achieve the same results but may help delay the time of which a facelift becomes appropriate and complement the results of surgery.
This procedure can improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as:
- Midface lift
- Deep creases below the lower eyelids
- Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth
- Fat that has fallen or is displaced
- Loss of muscle tone in the lower face may create jowls
- Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw can make even a person of normal weight appear to have a double chin
A facelift can have a dramatic and powerful impact on facial appearance or can be performed in such a way as to make a subtle statement depending on your goals. This procedure can oftentimes be performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a brow lift to correct a sagging or deeply furrowed brow, eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes, and facial fillers to restore volume to the cheeks and smooth out wrinkles.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Facelift?
A facelift is a highly individualized procedure. Facelift surgery is a good option for you if:
- You are physically healthy
- You don’t smoke
- You have a positive outlook and specific but realistic goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance
We first begin with a consultation with one of our skilled plastic surgeons where they discuss your goals and perform a physical examination of the face to determine exactly what must be corrected to achieve optimum results.
On the day of your facelift procedure, general anesthesia medications will be administered for your comfort and safety. A facelift incision often begins in the hairline at the temples, continues around the ear, and ends in the lower scalp. Fat may be redistributed from the face, jowls, and neck and underlying tissue is repositioned. Deeper layers of the face and the muscles are also lifted. Skin is redraped over the uplifted contours and excess skin is trimmed. A second incision under the chin may be necessary to further improve an aging neck. The incisions are then closed.
What to Expect After a Facelift
The visible improvements of a facelift appear as swelling and bruising subside. A bandage is placed around the face to help minimize swelling and bruising and small tubes may be present to draw off any excess blood or fluid.
It may take several months for swelling to fully dissipate and up to 6 months for the incision lines to mature. Once healed, the incision lines are well concealed within the hairline and in the natural contours of the face and ear. Your final result should restore a more youthful and rested appearance.
Life-long sun protection will help to maintain your rejuvenated appearance by minimizing photo-aging or sun damage. In addition, a healthy lifestyle will also help extend the results of your more youthful appearance.
