Microneedling, or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), is a state-of-the-art nonsurgical treatment for skin rejuvenation. Because the skin heals injuries incredibly efficiently, microneedling with Rejuvapen NXT uses numerous tiny needles to safely create microchannels (tiny holes) in the skin. This triggers your skin’s natural wound-repair responses to heal itself. The “micro-injuries” are so small that, in addition to healing the tiny punctures, they also repair the area around each puncture, such as old injuries, enlarged pores, blemishes, uneven complexion, and fine lines. Skin treated by microneedling will ultimately appear firmer, fuller, smoother, and clearer.
The staff at Arkansas Plastic Surgery are extremely skilled in microneedling and have helped countless patients improve skin tone and texture for a healthier, younger-looking appearance. Schedule your consultation today to get started!
HOW DOES MICRONEEDLING WORK?
As we age, our skin cannot maintain itself as easily, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and poor texture. The primary components in the skin that keep it firm, supple, and youthful-looking (collagen and elastin) begin to degrade. Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that boosts the natural production of these skin elements to increase the appearance and health of your skin.
Dr. David Bauer and Dr. Zachary Young utilize Rejuvapen NXT, an FDA-cleared device consisting of 12 fine stainless steel needles. The “microneedles” repeatedly pierce the stratum corneum (outermost layer of your skin) producing microscopic channels in the dermis (middle layer of your skin). These micro-injuries lead to the release of growth factors stimulating the formation of new collagen, elastin, and neovascularization (new blood vessels) in the dermis. As collagen and elastin production increases, you should experience natural-looking results and gain healthier, more supple skin. The process is gradual but effective and patients will notice an improvement in skin tone and texture in the weeks following treatment. It should take about a month or longer to see your final results.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER MICRONEEDLING
After treatment, you may experience minor side effects like dryness, redness, erythema (similar to a sunburn), and/or slight swelling. The treated skin will feel dry and tight; moderate flaking is normal in the first few days.
Microneedling is generally well tolerated by most skin types and recovers rapidly, typically following a three-day pattern.
- Day 1 – You can expect to experience skin redness and some minor swelling. Minor pinpoint bleeding at the treatment site is not uncommon in the hours after treatment. This often depends on the depth of the penetration of the microneedles in the treatment.
- Day 2 – Any redness and swelling present will begin to subside.
- Day 3 – Redness and swelling subsides fully and the skin takes on a healthy pinkish color.
Be sure to keep the treatment area clean and do not use harsh or irritating substances. Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser with mild enzymes in the morning and at night. Try not to scrub too hard — gentle exfoliation is all that is needed.
It is important to limit further damage to your skin from solar radiation. Although many sunscreens block UV-A radiation, look for a high-quality sunscreen that also blocks UV-B radiation. Blocking both forms of solar radiation will better prevent further cellular damage and help to preserve your results.
It is best to check with our team before using anything topically following microneedling therapy, including sunscreen.
Who is a good candidate for microneedling?
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your skin due to complexion issues, diminished tone or color, rough skin texture, low elasticity, sun damage, wrinkles, pore size, scars, or stretch marks, you may benefit from microneedling. As with any procedure, proper patient selection is imperative for ensuring a successful outcome. To determine if microneedling is right for you, consult with one of our experienced staff members.
Is microneedling safe?
Yes, microneedling is safe when performed by a trained professional. Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate natural healing to improve the skin’s appearance. The team at Arkansas Plastic Surgery will perform a thorough assessment to ensure your candidacy and safety.
What are the side effects of microneedling?
Minor side effects include dryness, redness, erythema (similar to a sunburn), slight swelling, treated skin feeling dry and tight, and moderate flaking.
How many microneedling treatments are needed?
The number of treatments needed will depend on your particular skin issue(s). Patients who have uneven skin tone and minor facial lines can often see results after a single treatment, while deeper acne scars may take two or more sessions to treat. The newly generated collagen and elastin will break down (as they naturally do), so periodic treatments may be required to maintain long-term results. Microneedling can be safely repeated every four to six weeks as needed.
What are some tips to prepare for a microneedling treatment?
To receive this treatment, your skin will need to be in good health. You can’t undergo this treatment with active acne, eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, allergic reactions, hives, fever blisters, or cold sores. If you have any of these, you must reschedule your appointment. If you are on blood thinners, you may have to stop taking these one-to-three days before your scheduled appointment.
To prepare your skin for microneedling, avoid exposure to the sun for a minimum of 24 hours unless you have applied a strong SPF for protection. Any prolonged exposure, including in tanning beds, may lead to irritation during the treatment.
Also, you should halt the use of some skincare products, including acid-based products like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and azelaic acid, along with retinoids. While these products are beneficial for the appearance and health of your skin, you should not use them right before or after your microneedling treatment. If you do, you may experience over-drying or skin irritation.
Some additional tips include:
- On the morning of your appointment, wash your skin using a gentle cleanser.
- Don’t wear any serums, perfume, or lotion at the time of your appointment.
- Do not wear makeup or remove makeup before arrival at your appointment.
- If you have sensitive skin, take Tylenol approximately one hour before your appointment time to help reduce discomfort caused by the treatment.
