You can instantly smooth away wrinkles and restore volume with facial fillers. Facial fillers are a non-surgical approach to reduce the signs of aging. These products can be used to restore volume and fullness to the soft tissue of the face. They can also correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as laugh lines, marionette lines, lipstick lines, and corners of the mouth. At Arkansas Plastic Surgery we offer Restylane®, JUVÉDERM® and RHA® aesthetic hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers.
HOW THE SERVICE CAN HELP YOU
As we age, the loss of subcutaneous fat just below the skin becomes more evident. Facial muscles work closer to the skin’s surface as this fat loss occurs, making wrinkles, crow’s feet, and smile lines more pronounced.
Facial fillers restore volume to the cheeks, smooth out wrinkles and bring a youthful vitality to the face. Results from using facial fillers can last a year or more, making them a very valuable option for patients seeking a more youthful appearance.
Fillers are usually formed from hyaluronic acid, a natural complex sugar found in all living cells and one of the major components of the dermis connective tissue, along with collagen and elastin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) retains water like a sponge, absorbing more than 1000 times its weight. This helps to attract and maintain water, hydrating your skin and increasing its volume and density. By combining lidocaine with the filler injections discomfort during the injection has been minimized.
Injections of fillers are a non-surgical option that may:
- Smooth deep furrows and wrinkles
- Restore volume to the cheeks and fullness to the lips
- Fill in marionette lines and naso-labial folds around the mouth
In addition to smoothing wrinkles, facial fillers can be used to:
- Plump up thin lips – Add shape, structure, and volume with fillers. Dermal filler treatments use hyaluronic acid which occurs naturally in the body and gives your lips a more natural look.
- Correct facial lines and folds – Treat the corners of your mouth where laugh lines, lipstick lines, and marionette lines most often occur.
While results are not permanent, they can last up to a year, and possibly longer depending on the product. The dermal treatment process is relatively simple and can be done in less time than you think! When you come in for your treatment, the injection site is first cleaned with an antibacterial agent and then the injection is applied in only a few moments. After your treatment, you might have some swelling redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and will normally last less than seven days.
If you are interested in facial fillers or have questions about this or other procedures, our skilled plastic surgeons, Dr. Bauer and Dr. Young, have years of experience and are happy to give you all of the information you need.
LIP ENHANCEMENT

Results typically last 6-12 months. After treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days. FACIAL FILLERS FAQS
Dermal fillers, sometimes called “face fillers,” or “cheek fillers,” can make a significant cosmetic difference by providing a more rested and youthful look. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about dermal fillers at Arkansas Plastic Surgery.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are biocompatible gels that are injected beneath the skin’s surface to add volume, smooth the skin’s appearance, and to contour the face in a more youthful way.
What type of fillers are offered in your office?
All of the fillers we inject here at Arkansas Plastic Surgery are composed of hyaluronic acid.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally occurring in the human body, mostly found in the layers of skin. Until we reach 25, we produce abundant amounts of hyaluronic acid, which is why our skin at this age is smooth, plump, and wrinkle-free. When hyaluronic acid decreases, the skin becomes dry, the first lines and wrinkles begin to appear, the cheeks begin to lose their volume and start to sag, and the mouth may begin to lose shape and the corners turn downward.
How do I know if I need filler or Botox?
Botox is most often chosen to smooth unwanted wrinkles and excessive facial expressions of the upper face. It can also be used to prevent lines/wrinkles, and in some circumstances other medical conditions such as migraines or excessive sweating. Fillers are chosen most often for deeper lines such as nasolabial folds or to fill areas of volume loss such as cheeks or lips. Facial contouring can also be achieved using fillers.
How do dermal fillers work?
When a dermal filler is injected, the hyaluronic acid attracts water. The resulting contour that it creates counteracts some of the sagging and wrinkling of skin that occurs naturally as we age.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Because dermal fillers are made from substances that our cells produce naturally, they are eventually reabsorbed into the body. Most fillers last 6-12 months but can last up to 18-24 months depending on what type of dermal fillers you receive, and the location where they are administered.
Are dermal fillers safe?
At Arkansas Plastic Surgery, our nurse uses very small, sterile needles, making the procedure safe and minimally invasive. We only use safe, proven dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid which our body already creates. Because of this, the potential for an allergic reaction is minimized. During your consultation, our nurse will discuss any potential side effects, as well as evaluate your health, daily medications, and expectations to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure.
What are the most common side effects of fillers?
Most common side effects include bleeding, bruising, or swelling at the injectable site. Less common side effects include itching, rash, lumps, or fever blisters if you are an individual who is prone to having them. Contouring irregularities can occur, but are usually mitigated by massaging the area thoroughly.
Where can face fillers be used?
Dermal fillers are commonly used in the lips, nasolabial folds, nose, and cheeks to create definition, contour, and a more youthful appearance.
Are dermal fillers painful?
We will use a topical anesthetic 15-30 minutes prior to the injection if there are no allergies to lidocaine. The filler itself also contains a small amount of lidocaine which will help numb the area after the initial stick. There is a minimal amount of discomfort to be expected even with the use of lidocaine.
How long does the procedure take?
The injections take approximately 30 minutes or less.
Can I return to work afterward?
Makeup can be applied immediately after the procedure, and you should have no problem returning to work right away. Due to the risk of bruising or swelling fillers should not be injected prior to a major life event.
How soon can I see results?
Some results will be obvious immediately, but the results vary from person to person. Your results should continue to get better over a period of two to four weeks. If your wrinkles are very deep, for example, your results may take time and repeated treatments to become optimal.
How can you avoid unnatural or exaggerated effects of fillers?
Always choose a reputable office where aesthetic injections are performed by experienced and skilled physicians or registered nurses. Schedule a consultation to meet your injector and discuss the goals for your injections to be confident you both understand your desired end result.
